A comment on More On Work Zone Safety

Brooks, that’s an excellent link for sources of accident causes and prevention ideas. Thanks Brooks. Texas seems to have its fair share, perhaps more than a fair share of wrong-way crashes along with those semi-truck collisions. What's going on down there in Texas? We've got I-35 between the two of our states, you in Texas and I in Iowa. The interstate highway system is proving to be deadly this summer. Add texting and cell phone distractions and the drunken driving accidents on I-35 and I-80 are stacking up. Hang in there you guys are doing well for your clients as well as for the citizens in Texas.

Brooks, We had the same type of crash in Iowa on I-80. My guess is the trucker was texting or otherwise distracted while driving.

A comment on Let's Avoid Any More Boat Accidents On Lake Austin

Ron

Thanks for the tips. You make a very good point about the effects of alcohol being multiplied on the water. And yet, it seems that no boater is ready for his or her trip to the lake without a cooler stocked with beer. In this particular wreck, the news is now reporting that the arrested boater had "a few beers" and had eaten some fruit soaked in alcohol.

A comment on Let's Avoid Any More Boat Accidents On Lake Austin

A lot of people do not realize that 1 drink on land will have the same effect as 4 drinks on the water due to the wave motion, sun, wind, and fatigue. Also, boaters should take a boat safety class. These are typically offered by USCG Auxiliary and the US Power Squadrons. Finally, boaters should get a free vessel exam offered by the above agencies. There is no fine or fee and it is purely voluntary, However, the examiner will go over a checklist to make sure that you have the proper safety equipment on board. According to USCG statistics, there were over 600 boating fatalities nationwide in 2008. Finally, you should wear you life jacket at all times. Federal (USCG) law requires that all kids must be wearing one under the age of 13. Over 85% of the people that drowned last year were not wearing lifejackets. Have a safe and happy summer!

A comment on Wrong Way Wrecks Are Still A Problem

Brooks: I've collected as many news items on wrong-way collisions as were available during the last 3 or 4 months. My intent was to report on all for a six-month period, but in going through them I wrote up only July's since there so so many to handle and the theme simply keeps repeating itself. I'll publish those findings later this week on the Des Moines site for the InjuryBoard.

A comment on Building Austin, Building Injustice: Working Conditions in Austin's Construction Industry

Just curious, how many of these workers were documented US citizens?????????How many had the option to be trained? What percentage of these workers were union? Were the contractors fined for failure to train or use trained people? When do we as a union(USA) start enforcing the laws and levying high fines to force contractors to be accountable for their employees and not just labeling them as numbers. "Well if number 123 dies we can get number 124 to take his or her place. As Ted Kennedy says "when does the greet stop"A good days pay for a good safe day at work. Its time for the government to enforce these laws and start keeping us safe at work instead of afraid at work. "If we don't get the job done then they will lay me off and hire someone who will. This is where unions come in. Unfortunately unions contractor's also have the greed factor. Not all, but some.It starts with government and right down the line.Shame on any contractor for not using trained help or use people already trained.Pay the extra and save on a life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
