    On June 22, 2006, the US House of Representatives approved H.R. 5638, the Permanent Estate Tax Relief Act of 2006 by a vote of 269-156. If enacted, the bill would increase the estate tax exemption to $5 million and lower the tax rate to 15% for estates between $5 million and $25 million and to 30% for estates greater than $25 million. The Senate has not yet taken up this bill.
